Our last movie of the 2015/16 year was Selma. There was so much to discuss in the film, not only about civil rights but about Martin Luther King as he was portrayed in this movie. 

There is so much power in a film like this for our students. They see how one person can make a difference in the world and change things for the better. I hope that your students will also enjoy Selma.

Shadowlands is such a wonderful movie to learn more about C.S. Lewis and his wife Joy. Such a powerful story of love, caring, grief, transformation and faithfulness. Most of our students hadn't seen this movie before but most have them had read some of C.S. Lewis' books. This I think made the students want to engage more.

Our next great movie that brought about lots of discussion was Inherit the Wind based losely on the Scopes trial. What a great movie for discussion!

Our next movie was The Imitation Game. This was a challenging movie to look at the concept of heroes and how people are treated despite their contributions to society. Set in WW#2 it was a powerful movie to study for our move through modern history.

It was certainly thought provoking, and well worth watching! The discussion was rich and overall it was a great session.

Our next movie, a real classic was set in the early 1950's with a jury getting ready to give a verdict. 
It was really a thinking movie with lots to discuss!

We discussed all kinds of topics from capital punishment to reasonable doubt. We discussed our justice system and group decision making in all kinds of areas. This was a rich discussion that was challenging for all.

Our next movie, Chariots of Fire was set in the 1920's. It was an excellent study on so many levels. Learning about how our choices honor God, ourselves or men.

As we move through modern history, Wild Heart Can't be Broken is set in the Depression Era and includes lots of elements of grit and determination against all odds. 

Entertainment in travelling fairground shows were experiencing hard times which is the setting of this movie.

Our protagonist, and determined young woman really showed us about choices made and really making the best out of tough situations.

Flyboys was quite a contrast to All Quiet on the Western Front! It was great to contrast two different places to serve in WW#1 and the risks in both. You might have lived longer as a soldier but the conditions were horrific, as a pilot your life expectancy was shorter but the conditions were better - that is quite a dilemma to discuss!

Again we learned more about WW#1 through this movie - especially elements of the geography of the air battles.

All Quiet on the Western Front was a sobering way to start of the new year.
For Grade 11 all of the videos we are studying are based on modern history starting at WW#1. This was a much heavier film that anything we had seen before.

There was so much to discuss. The movie being told from the German perspective made our students think. From characters to irony we covered several literary themes. We also covered the atrocities of WW#1. I hope you enjoy this movie with your students!
