A Developing World Map and Lessons



A Developing World is a fantastic map by Canadian Geographic that allows students to compare Canada to other countries on many different levels. 

I had Elizabeth use this map to learn about world development, poverty, education, GDP, child mortality etc. It is an excellent opportunity to explore these topics with your student.

I made up this sheet to be able to search countries, compare them with Canada and record conclusions.

There are some great lesson plans as well on this page.




When Elizabeth was in Grade 6, we explored many countries and their challenging issues through resources like Peter Menzel’s books Hungry Planet and Material World. These are impactful books we pull out regularly to remind ourselves how blessed we are!

To Trace or Not to Trace that is the Question...

With so many sources for outline maps on the internet, it seems almost like torture to make a child trace a map and take all of that time, and yet, we do have our daughter trace maps. I think that in tracing, we see so much more of the map in an intimate way.


It reminds me of the difference between driving through an neighbourhood in a car versus walking through it. It is amazing what you can miss. Sometimes you need to drive and sometimes you can take the time to walk.


Hence why we have used both methods, and will continue to. 
We have also used mapping activities through Enchanted Learning and Story of the World.

China Unit Study






We had fun with our China Unit Study last year. We used a lot of technology and subscriptions to extend the study.
The first resource we used was Voice of the Martyrs Bold Believers China. These amazing studies are available for free if you run them off yourself. You can choose to purchase them for $15.00 as well.

There were amazing stories of Christians in China. There were also prayer suggestions and information about the church in China. 


One subscription we used was World Book Kids. It has a great feature called Compare Countries. It allows you to compare two countries from population to religion to main exports to army size. This type of comparison is always revealing.









I then had our daughter look at the differences between Communism and Democracy. We looked in World Book for a definition of both and she made a Wordle of each. http://www.wordle.net/ She also used Wordle for her cover page. For this one she listed every word that made her think of China.



Our daughter did some graphing in this unit as well. She graphed religion in Canada and religion in China as well as graphing trade with China. For all the graphs we used this site.

One of the enlightening exercises I had her do was go around to every room in the house and find all the things that she could that were made in China and take a picture of them. She had page after page of items. Here are just a few.

I suggested that our daughter use Inspiration (Webspiration) for some of her unit. She chose to do a city study of Beijing and use it that way. She also used it for The Great Wall.





This was a rich study of looking at China. I think that we learned a lot about China as we compared it to Canada in so many different ways.

If I had been blogging when.... Window on the World

I wanted to do a few posts from time to time called "If I had been blogging when...." In this post I wanted to tell you how we used the book Window on the World by Daphne Spraggett and Jill Johnstone. Each time we read about a country or people group in Window on the World our daughter looked at the prayer and praise items, chose ones that she wanted to focus on and copied them on a 3x5 card. She then attached the card to the wall and connected it to our world map by string. By the end of the year our wall was covered with countries we had read about and prayed for. This was a wonderful way to learn geography, study countries and pray for them. Sorry the picture is a little fuzzy, hopefully you get the idea. Blessings!
